Synopsis from FantasticFiction:
There were no surprises in Gatlin County. We were pretty much the epicenter of the middle of nowhere. At least, that's what I thought. Turns out, I couldn't have been more wrong. There was a curse. There was a girl. And in the end, there was a grave.
Lena Duchannes is unlike anyone the small Southern town of Gatlin has ever seen, and she's struggling to conceal her power, and a curse that has haunted her family for generations. But even within the overgrown gardens, murky swamps and crumbling graveyards of the forgotten South, a secret cannot stay hidden forever.
Ethan Wate, who has been counting the months until he can escape from Gatlin, is haunted by dreams of a beautiful girl he has never met. When Lena moves into the town's oldest and most infamous plantation, Ethan is inexplicably drawn to her and determined to uncover the connection between them.
In a town with no surprises, one secret could change everything.
Right, let me get this out of my system...
OHMIGOD I FREAKING LOVED THIS BOOK! I WANT THE SEQUEL NOW NOW NOW, GIVE IT TO ME! GO READ THIS BOOK AND LOVE IT TOO. CASTER FOREVER!
Ahem, apologies. But seriously, what a fantastic book. How refreshing to see a YA paranormal book from the male point of view, and written surprisingly well by two women. If you're tired of vampires/werewolves/ghosts/fairies/etc, come back to the magic side. Garcia and Stohl give a fresh retelling of a worn and beaten genre people have said has seen its last days. The gothic Southern setting keeps the atmosphere tense and almost claustrophobic - how do you keep secrets when everyone knows everything?
Ethan and Lena are a great fictional couple. How nice to see the guy pining for the unattainable girl for once, and a girl worth pining over. Lena is the weird girl you tried to avoid but secretly wished you had her confidence when you were younger. The angst isn't overdone and it gets a bit fruity at times but never purple. The series is packed full of great characters, from Lena's family, both good and bad, to Ethan's guardian Amma.
This one's a nice big read too, nothing feels rushed or crammed in at the last minute. It takes it's time, it sets everything up and it's completely gripping. I devoured half of it in one sitting and would have continued if I hadn't needed to eat. So bring on the sequel!

I'm glad you wrote something up about this book. I picked it up just to satisfy a buy 2 get 1 free through a book club. Haven't had a chance to read it yet, but it's good to hear that I'd probably enjoy it.
